This study examines relationships between geography achievement and the psychological characteristics of geography learners in eighth grade. Using data provided by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the researchers developed a statistical model of geography achievement comprising student and teacher/school-level predictor variables. The model included five predictor variables based on composite measures of student affective disposition. Hierarchical linear modeling accounted for data clustering. Controlling for the full set of predictors, geography achievement was positively associated with students’ self-reported enjoyment of complex problems, academic self-discipline, and interest in and enjoyment of geography, whereas lower levels of geography achievement were associated with students’ self-reported level of persistence in learning. Race, gender, disability, minority language status, and instructional exposure were predictive of affective differences between groups of geography learners. The results of the study underscore the need to consider student attitudes in efforts to close achievement gaps and encourage the future geography intentions of students in U.S. geography education. © 2023 by the authors.
The ideal of U.S. public education as a great equalizer remains unrealized across large swaths of the country. Young people in schools are at varying levels of educational advantage and disadvantage owing to wide gaps in learning opportunities and disparate access to high-quality curriculum. Unequal educational achievement has also been linked to inequities affecting some students before they enter school due to socioeconomic circumstances, prejudice, and discriminatory social systems and structures. In this study, we begin to partition the various factors that account for inequality in student outcomes in the context of U.S. geography education. Using large-scale data sets provided by the National Center for Education Statistics within the U.S. Department of Education, we developed a two-level statistical model to analyze the extent to which geography achievement in eighth grade varies systematically with contextual opportunity to learn (OTL) factors and the relative poverty level of neighborhoods around schools. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to account for data clustering, producing an achievement estimate for each predictor and controlling for the effects of all other predictors. Statistically significant OTL predictors included instructional exposure, taking geography prior to eighth grade, teaching experience, and the availability of computers in classrooms. Schools located in neighborhoods with higher income-to-poverty ratios outperformed schools in neighborhoods closer to the federal poverty threshold. Controlling for OTL and school neighborhood effects accounted for some of the geography achievement disadvantage associated with race and other student characteristics. Geographers can further explore these relationships with formal mediational models and educational programs based on equity-oriented frameworks.
This paper examines national gaps and trends in geography achievement in eighth grade from 1994 to 2018. Statistical models comprising student- and school-level variables were developed to predict achievement using data provided by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Although there were statistically significant relationships between achievement and school-level attributes such as geographic region and school sector, the magnitudes of the coefficients were relatively minor and inconsistent over time compared with student-level characteristics such as gender, race, ethnicity, and parental education. The results inform current policy directions and efforts to foster educational equity in K-12 geography.
Computers and geospatial technologies such as Geographic Information Systems, Google Earth, and the Global Positioning System (GPS) are increasingly common tools for geography instruction in schools. The NAEP Data Explorer was used to conduct an analysis of geography achievement in the eighth grade based on differences in students' access to and uses of computers and other technologies at home and school. The analysis over the study period (1994-2018) documents the emergence of technologies available to support geography instruction. Results point to differences in geography achievement associated with differential access to technology and applications of technology for geographic learning.
The relationship between teacher quality and student achievement is often at the heart of educational debates about student success. In this study, we leverage data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) to explore relationships between geography achievement in the 8th grade and various indicators of teacher quality. We found positive associations between achievement, years of teaching experience, and teacher participation in workshops, curriculum committees, and other forms of training and professional development. However, the benefits of teaching experience, training, and professional development are not uniformly experienced by different groups of students.
